The conflict between top terrorists, the conflict between political leaders, and the extortion and expansion of dominance are causing one body after another to fall in Chittagong. Most of the murders are taking place due to the conflict of the underworld. Some have also fallen victim to the conflict between political parties. Despite all these murders, the activity of the law enforcement agencies is limited to shouting. The CMP Commissioner is ordering brushfire on sight of the terrorists, the murderers are out of reach. This has spread panic among the people.
After the mass uprising, on August 29 last year, Jubo League activists Md. Anis and Masud Kaiser were shot dead near the Oxygen-Quaish road of Bayezid Bostami police station in Chittagong city. Two separate cases were filed for these two murders, with the city’s top terrorist Sajjad Hossain alias Chhota Sajjad as the main accused. According to the police, former Shibir cadre Sajjad Ali (Senior Sajjad) ordered the disposal of the bodies of the two while sitting in India.
Top terrorist Sarwar Hossain Babla was shot dead in the Chalitalli area of Bayezid police station in Chittagong city on the evening of November 5. Babla, who had gone to participate in the election campaign for Chittagong-8 constituency with BNP nominated candidate Ershad Ullah, was shot dead with a pistol in his neck among hundreds of people that day. Even though 10 days have passed since the murder, the police have not been able to reveal the identity of the killers or catch the main killers.
The day after Babla’s murder, terrorists shot a CNG-powered autorickshaw driver in the same area. It is known that the autorickshaw driver was opposing the sale of drugs. There is panic among the locals after the two consecutive shootings in the same place.
On May 25, miscreants publicly shot former terrorist Md. Akbar alias Dhakaiya Akbar in Patenga after putting a woman in a honey trap. Akbar died the next day at Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Akbar was a listed terrorist in the Bayezid area of Nagar. Police said that there are at least 10 cases against Akbar, including murder, arms and extortion. Akbar was an associate of Sarwar Hossain Babla. After Akbar’s murder, his family filed a case with Patenga Police Station against 11 people. RAB has already arrested Sajjad’s elder brother Osman Ali and nephew Alvin and later handed them over to the police. In this regard, Patenga Police Station Sub-Inspector Amitabh Das, the investigation officer of the case, said that the pistol used in the murder has not yet been recovered. Although four people have been arrested in the case, two are currently out on bail.
Earlier, miscreants shot dead two people in a private car on Baklia Access Road on March 29. The deceased, Bakhtiar Hossain (30) and Md. Abdullah (32), are known followers of Sarwar Hossain Babla. Sarwar Hossain Babla was also in the same car at that time. Although Babla was the target of the terrorists, he survived that day.
On October 27, a Chhatra Dal activist from Ziauddin Chowdhury College, Md. Sajjad (22), was shot dead during a clash over tearing a political banner in the Baklia Access Road area. At least 10 people were injured in the incident. According to party sources, a clash broke out between followers of former organizing secretary of Chittagong Metropolitan Jubo Dal Emdadul Haque Badsha and former president Gazi Siraj Ullah that day. The deceased Sajjad was a supporter of Emdadul’s side.
Baklia Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mozammel Haque said, “We have arrested 11 people in this case so far and recovered some weapons. The case has now been handed over to the DB.”
Aftab Uddin Tahsin, the son of a businessman, was shot dead by terrorists in the remote area of Chandgaon on the afternoon of October 21 last year. On the night of November 7, Md. was stabbed to death by some youths riding motorcycles in the Maijpara area of Halishahar in the city. Akbar (35), a young man, was murdered.
Asked to assess the law and order situation in the city after the series of murders, CMP spokesperson and assistant commissioner Aminur Rashid said, “We are investigating each incident as sensitive. The criminals are being brought under the law. We are working all out to catch those who are absconding.”
